Car insurance rates are based on many different factors, and two of the most important are age and driving experience. Insurers use these details as part of their risk assessment because newer drivers generally have less time behind the wheel, while more experienced drivers have had more opportunities to build a driving history.
Age and experience are related, but they are not the same thing. A 17-year-old who just received a license is both young and inexperienced, while an adult who gets licensed later in life may be older but still lack driving experience. Car insurance companies can consider both factors, along with driving history, vehicle type, coverage limits, location, and other information when calculating premiums.
Younger Drivers Often Pay More
Young drivers commonly face higher insurance costs because insurers generally view them as a higher-risk group. New Jersey's Department of Banking and Insurance explains that younger drivers, particularly those under 25, tend to pay more because they have less driving experience and are involved in more accidents as a group.
That does not mean every young driver will pay the same premium. A teenager added to a family policy may have a different rate than a 22-year-old buying an individual policy, and each insurer uses its own rating plan. The vehicle being insured, location, coverage choices, and available discounts can all change the final price.
New Jersey also specifically accounts for driving experience through its insurance eligibility system. Newly licensed drivers are assigned three inexperience points, regardless of age. One of those points is removed for each year of driving experience until the driver has been licensed for three years. This shows why insurers and regulators do not look at age alone when evaluating newer drivers.
Experience Can Improve Your Risk Profile Over Time
As drivers spend more time on the road, they gain experience recognizing hazards, responding to traffic conditions, and making everyday driving decisions. A longer driving history also gives insurers more information to evaluate. Someone who has been licensed for years without serious violations or at-fault accidents presents a different insurance history than someone who received a license recently.
Experience is most valuable when it is paired with responsible driving. Simply holding a license for a long time does not guarantee a lower rate if the record also contains repeated accidents, speeding violations, suspensions, or claims. Car insurance companies evaluate multiple factors together rather than rewarding years of driving in isolation.
For younger drivers, this means premiums may become more favorable as they gain experience and maintain a good record. New Jersey's consumer guidance notes that auto insurance rates tend to decrease with age as long as drivers maintain good driving records.
Age Is Only One Part of the Insurance Calculation
It can be tempting to assume that reaching a particular birthday will automatically produce a major insurance discount. In reality, pricing is more complicated. An insurer may consider age, but it can also evaluate claims history, traffic violations, how the vehicle is used, the type of vehicle, annual mileage, selected coverage, deductibles, and other rating factors permitted in the state.
That helps explain why two drivers of the same age can receive very different quotes. One may have several years of clean driving history and a modest vehicle, while another may have accidents, violations, a more expensive vehicle, or different coverage limits.
The overall cost of insurance can also take up a meaningful share of a household budget. According to CNBC.com, drivers nationwide spent an average of 3.41% of their income on car insurance premiums. The figure was reported in its 2024 analysis of rising auto insurance costs and illustrates why even modest differences in premiums can matter to drivers.
Because insurers weigh information differently, comparing options can be worthwhile rather than assuming age alone determines what you should be paying.
New Drivers Can Look for Ways to Reduce Costs
Newer drivers cannot immediately change their age or years of experience, but they may still have opportunities to reduce insurance costs. Maintaining a clean driving record is one of the most important long-term steps because additional tickets or accidents can add more risk factors to an already limited driving history.
Young drivers may also qualify for certain discounts. New Jersey notes that many insurers offer good-student discounts to younger drivers who maintain qualifying grades. State law also requires insurers to offer discounts to drivers who complete an approved defensive driving course.
Families should ask their agent whether adding a new driver to an existing household policy makes sense compared with purchasing a separate policy. The answer can depend on the insurer, vehicles, household drivers, and coverage needs. It is also important to notify the insurer when a new household member becomes licensed rather than leaving that driver undisclosed.
An independent agent can help identify discounts and compare how different car insurance companies handle younger or newly licensed drivers.
Experienced Drivers Should Still Review Their Rates
More experience can help, but experienced drivers should not assume they are automatically receiving the best available rate. Premiums can change even when a driver has not had an accident or ticket. Repair costs, claim trends, insurance company pricing changes, vehicle replacement costs, and other market conditions can affect renewals.
Life changes can matter as well. A driver may begin working from home and reduce annual mileage, replace an older vehicle, add another household driver, move, or combine auto insurance with a homeowners or renters policy. Each of these changes can be a reason to review the policy.
Car insurance companies also use different rating methods and offer different discounts, so staying with the same carrier for years does not necessarily mean that carrier will always provide the best combination of price and coverage. Comparing policies periodically can help experienced drivers see whether their current plan still fits their needs.
Older Drivers May See Rates Change Again
Age-related pricing does not always move in one direction throughout a driver's life. While experienced middle-aged drivers often benefit from many years behind the wheel, rates can change again as drivers get older. Each insurer evaluates age and other risk factors according to its approved rating methodology.
Older drivers can still take steps to manage costs by maintaining a clean record, reviewing annual mileage, choosing appropriate deductibles, asking about defensive driving discounts, and checking whether bundling policies offers savings. They should also review coverage rather than reducing protection solely to lower the premium.
The key is to look at the complete policy. A lower quote may include different deductibles, liability limits, or optional coverages. When comparing car insurance companies, drivers should make sure they are comparing similar protection rather than focusing only on the monthly payment.
Work With an Independent Agency to Compare Your Options
Age and driving experience can influence car insurance costs, but they work alongside many other factors. Younger and newly licensed drivers often face higher rates, while additional years of safe driving can improve the risk profile insurers see. Even experienced drivers, however, can benefit from reviewing coverage as rates, vehicles, and household needs change.
